Lucky : A Special Member of Our Family

 19. Lucky : A Special Member of Our Family

                                               -  Pranjal Swamy

One day, suddenly, my father brought a new family member into our home. It was our beloved dog. His arrival brought a new wave of happiness into our lives. The house became full of excitement, laughter, and playful moments. All of us siblings decided to name him 'Lucky.' Just like his name, he truly proved to be lucky for us. After he came into our lives, our home was always filled with joy and happiness.

Before Lucky came, we had never kept a dog at home. Therefore, we did not have much experience in raising one. Even then, my mother and father took great care of him with a lot of love. They raised him just like their own baby. When Lucky first came to our house, he was very small. Because of this, we all took extra care of him. In the beginning, he used to drink only milk. Slowly, he also started eating the same food that we ate.

Lucky was very cute in appearance. His color was brown. His fur was brownish, and his eyes were blackish-brown. When he was small, he looked very chubby. His nails were slightly long. As he grew older, his height increased and his body became stronger. He also started looking very attractive.

When Lucky was young, we used to play with him every day. Whenever we returned home from school, he would bark happily after seeing us. When we went close to him and patted him lovingly, he would calmly sit beside us. He quickly learned many things about our home. Whatever we taught him, he would learn very quickly. The stairs and the terrace of our house were his favorite places. He rarely liked to sit anywhere else in the house. Lucky was very disciplined. He did everything at the right time. Whether it was eating or going outside to the washroom, he would remind us at the correct time. This habit of his always surprised us.

My aunt’s children visited our house only once a year during the summer vacations. Even then, Lucky never barked at them. Whenever they came, he immediately recognized them. Sometimes I felt that he had a magical power. He could recognize a person’s intentions through their behavior. He never allowed our neighbors to enter our house easily. Whenever they came near, he would bark loudly to alert us.

Lucky also had a very funny habit. He loved watching TV serials with my mother and aunt. When my uncle turned on the news, Lucky would not pay attention to the television. But whenever a serial started, he would sit quietly and watch it. Gradually, watching serials also became his habit. Every member of our family was deeply connected with him. Every day at 5 p.m., he was ready to play games with us. He especially loved playing with a ball. We had a lot of fun playing with him.

The relationship between Lucky and my father was very special. Lucky was my father’s favorite. Being the youngest member of the family, he used to show many tantrums to us. But in front of my father, he would sit quietly like a well-behaved boy. If my father ever scolded him, he would get upset and ignore him. He would even refuse to eat until my father came near him, gently patted him, and told him to eat. My father used to take him out for a walk every day. Whenever Lucky heard the sound of my father’s vehicle, he would immediately stand up. Their bond was very deep and special.

Even if we accidentally hurt him at times, Lucky never bit any of us. He was very loving and understanding. Even if we left him outside, he would always return home on his own. Our Lucky was also a pure vegetarian dog, which made him even more unique. He would not allow unknown people to even pass in front of our house.

30 September 2022 became the saddest day of our lives. On that day, as usual, my father or uncle did not take him out for a walk. Instead, my grandfather took him outside. As soon as the chain was loosened, Lucky ran forward. At that moment, a cow came from the front, and Lucky’s chain got stuck in the cow’s leg. Both of them were trying to free themselves from the tangle. Unfortunately, the cow’s leg stepped on Lucky’s stomach. My father quickly ran there and freed him, but he was badly injured.

We immediately took him to the hospital. We also took great care of him at home. However, unfortunately, he could not stay with us for many more days. The news that Lucky had left us was a huge shock for our entire family. Tears would not stop from anyone’s eyes. For the first time in my life, I saw my father crying so much. We buried Lucky in our farm. Even today, whenever we visit the farm, we always go to that place. In his memory, we have planted a tree there. Lucky may no longer be with us, but his memories will always remain alive in our hearts.
